I experimented with a mix of vector and photo styles and used 3ds max with scanline renderer and Light Tracer and lots of postwork in Photoshop and After Effects. The white lines were done by using the "Torus Knot" primitive in 3ds max. The poly objects were arranged using reactor dynamics. You can see the complete series at
